The Character Success Skills Program
For Improving Student Responsibility and Citizenship Skills
Character Success Skills are perhaps the most important ingredient of success. Character education is now a state mandated standard curriculum requirement. Children need help in developing the self discipline, morality, care, goal focus and values that they will need in order to succeed in college and today's world.
Positive Inner Strength and Values
The Character Success Skills Program utilizes a curriculum to build values, character, self discipline, persistence and citizenship skills in students. The program involves a learn by doing format. Students are required to fulfill a number of character education challenges to demonstrate their mastery of key character and Leadership Power Skills. Students are directed to take action to demonstrate and reinforce the values and skills they are learning.
Heart Mind Body Skills
The program uses a HEART MIND BODY Skill building curriculum to build student care, emotional intelligence, problem solving, communication and community contribution skills.
An Experiment in Child Rearing
Children today think, feel, communicate and learn differently than children of the past. We are undertaking an experiment in child rearing. Never before in history have children been raised with so much exposure to technology and media. An average child watches TV, video or computer screens for about 5 to 7 hours a day. This hyper stimulation is having an intense effect upon the learning, communication, behavior and values of our children. Children today want instant results. They want things to come fast and easy. School work, however, is harder than ever before. Children today are often self centered. Children are exposed to constant violence and aggression on TV and the media. An average child today sees 28,000 murders by the time he or she is 18 years old. Children learn from TV that sarcasm, put downs, threats, defiance and aggression are the most effective forms of conflict resolution and showing off one’s intelligence. Children are continually exposed to fresh, wise cracking, sarcastic role models who share the common joke of how they can fool parents and teachers, often defying and disrespecting authority.
Program Components Include:
Weekly goal focus leadership skill building classes are used to instruct students in specific leadership skills and monitor the mastery and use of the skills.
Control Over Learning Content
Students work together to select the leadership and character skills that they believe are most important to improving their communities and their own lives.
Instruction in a Step by Step Character Ed. Curriculum
Key Leadership and Character Skills are broken down into ‘bite sized’ 3 to 5 step Leadership Tools that make the learning of these skills fun, easy and effective.
Creation of Personal Goals and a Life Vision
Students are engaged in creating personal meaningful goals that can serve as a road map and vision for what they want to accomplish in the future. Students learn how to set and achieve goals. Students learn how to achieve by breaking their goals down into small action steps that lead to victory, success and accomplishment.
Students receive certificates of accomplishment for each of the key Power Leadership Skills they master. Students move up in Leadership Ranking in accordance with their community contributions.
Students must demonstrate their mastery of key Leadership Skills in order to advance in their Power Leadership Rankings.
Visual Progress Road Map
A Progress Road Map charts the successful mastery of key Power Leadership Skills.
Mind Heart Body Discussion Groups
Students participate in an ongoing discussion format designed to strengthen their listening and communication skills. This format uses a Mind Heart Body communication approach in which students talk first about facts, what they know and insights concerning a key issue (Mind Discussion), then talk about the emotions, desires and motivations of the people involved in the issue (Heart Discussion) and finally, the needed actions concerning how to resolve, or what should be done concerning, the issue (Body Discussion).
The program helps students to build key character, goal focus and leadership skills.
Character Education That Works
This program fulfills character education standards through active student learning, application and use of what they are learning to benefit their communities.
Community Contribution Project
Students work together to accomplish a specific and beneficial community service.
